Twitter and Health Advice

Twitter has gained popularity over the past year. Many companies have started to enter the world of tweeting. Among other health companies, I follow Women's Health Magazine because they tweet several times a day.The health companies generally post interesting tweets rather than random questions a lot of other companies post. Most apparel companies are always asking followers "what is you favorite place to workout" or "tell us your favorite Nike athlete". Yes, these engage the followers but the information health companies post are of some substantial value to the viewers. For instance, Women's Health Magazine posts recipes, workouts, discounts, and all other types of things that may be of interest to an active female.

Social media has opened a whole new door for companies in the world of getting their messages across. In my opinion, Facebook is utilized more for random engagements with consumers and Twitter is used more for actual information.

The cool thing about Twitter is that you can follow several companies who are of interest to you. Most of the health companies are active tweeters and provide you with random tidbits you would not have otherwise known. Even though a lot of the information I get from health companies on Twitter is not life-changing, I get a lot of entertainment out of the tweets. For example, here is a post by Women's Health Magazine:
"Women are better doctors and investors than men, plus they have better muscular endurance " This tweet is very entertaining but it is not life-changing.

Overall, I feel like the world of Twitter has changed the idea of social media. We have migrated to a type that is more current and by the moment. Hats off to the health companies, they have mastered the world of Twitter one tweet at a time. I can live the rest of my adult life knowing endless amounts of useless trivia.

  1. I think your post is really enlightening. As an avid twitter user, I shockingly never thought about using it as a way to keep up with the latest in exercise trends or follow health magazines/companies. However in between reading your post and writing this comment, I went and found a few to follow and found so much great information on new exercises, ways to eat healthier and stay in shape in general. The method of putting this information out on twitter makes it very accessible to someone who does not have a lot of time to research these types of things and I feel like twitter is a great way for college students or anyone who is on the go, to find out about what's new in the work out world.

  2. This humorous post has a great point. Social media, especially Twitter, has the opportunity to disseminate huge amounts of information. The audience has the choice to follow the accounts they are interested in and participate to their personal desired level of extent. I think that using Twitter to learn interesting health facts or discoveries are a great way to keep updated and help lead a healthy lifestyle.

  3. Like the first commenter, I also had never considered using Twitter to get quick health tips. I think that too many companies and brands tweet, but don't think about making their content valuable to their audience. Health companies, on the other hand, already have a slew of important, relevant and interesting information to share with their audience--health tips.

I also agree that Twitter is used more for the spread of information than Facebook, which is why I like Twitter so much more. I learn so much every day from spending time on it.

  4. I recently got really into using Twitter for health, I follow “Eat This Not That” which gives me a lot of good information daily. I never thought to use Twitter for exercise, I’m really glad you gave me that idea! It’s such a great idea for these companies to use to twitter to not only inspire healthy living, but to gain interest in their companies. I never even knew “Eat This Not That” was a book until I started following their twitter, now I own the book! I find that it is also a great way to inspire healthy living, everyday these companies tweet useful bits of information that help me make positive choices in my lifestyle.

  5. Useless trivia is fun! I don't think that any company is trying to change your life with their Tweets, but if they made you smile or lured you to their website, they've done their job. Interesting stories and information are, in my opinion, the best way to connect with an audience. If they shared TOO MUCH information, people would not have the time to read it. Great post; it inspired me to start following Men's Health.

  6. I somewhat disagree that Facebook is for random interactions and Twitter is for information. Actually, it is often the opposite! If a consumer wants to look something up, they might check out a Facebook page for some quick info. I think the point of Twitter is to entertain consumers with little tweets like the one you mentioned. But obviously, either of these social medias can be used both ways!
Thanks for the recommendation by the way I am not following Women's Health!
